Every November 11th, Canadians take time to remember and honour the fallen soldiers who served and the many who lost their lives defending our country. We also take pause to remember those who not so long ago served and are currently serving overseas, and those who have lost their lives. This is an important time of year for all of our nation’s veterans and it is our responsibility to give back, and show our respect in any way we can. Since 2007, the Canadian Legacy Project has presented the Annual Veterans Food Drive in support of the Veterans Food Bank and the Calgary Poppy Fund. Every year, the Calgary community is amazing in coming together to support this great cause and this year, Qualico Communities Calgary is proud to be a part of the Veterans Food Drive to provide much needed donations for the veteran community.
The Canadian Legacy Project has deep roots in the Calgary community, putting together a number of fundraising events to support our veterans every year. The Canadian Legacy Project was created out of necessity as it became evident that many Canadian veterans had been, and continue to live in poverty; lacking life’s basic necessities such as food, shelter and water. They are a charitable organization that advocates for our nation’s veterans, supporting them by creating programs to help improve their everyday lives. They are a 100% volunteer managed and directed organization and their low overhead costs allow for more funds to be allocated to our veterans.
The Veterans Food Drive, along with the Calgary Poppy Fund, is a critical component to supporting our veterans every year. The food drive runs from November 1 to 15, and accepts both food and financial donations. Money that is raised is used to pay for Co-op gift cards, housing for vets, and service dogs.
“I started this program in 2007, the moment I returned from a trip to Vancouver to visit my Grandfather a World War II vet” says David Howard, President and Founder of the Canadian legacy project. “My grandfather was living in a 600ft apartment. I was sleeping on the floor and when I woke up, he was eating dog food. Our vets should not have to live like this,” says Howard.
The Canadian Legacy Project is fueled by four key objectives: to provide a strong support system for veterans young and old, to give financial assistance to the veterans in need, to volunteer time to provide a better quality of life, and to build a strong community of supporters for our nation’s veterans. The organization’s work has been tremendously successful in Calgary and area since its inception over a decade ago. Annually, they have been able to raise approximately $300,000 in food and donations!
As an organization that focuses a large portion of its efforts on community initiatives, Qualico Communities Calgary is proud to be contributing to the Canadian Legacy Project through this year’s Veteran’s Food Drive. The infectious excitement and positivity surrounding this program can be seen throughout our company. The generosity of our staff, trades and partners has been undeniable as donations continued to pile up! Some staff have even brought in memorabilia from family members who have previously served for our country; showing that this is a cause near and dear to many of us.
Remembrance Day is an important day for all Canadians where we take a step away from our everyday lives to show our respect to those who have put their life on the line defending our nation and fighting to protect the freedoms that we enjoy today. Canada wouldn’t be the country we love without our veterans. Be sure you lend a helping-hand this season. While the Veterans Food Drive only runs from Nov 1 to Nov 15, the need for support continues throughout the year! Donations are accepted year-round.
The November 11 ceremony at the Field of Crosses on Memorial Drive, begins at 10:30am and is a family friendly event. http://www.canadianlegacy.org/events/
