Decorating a children’s room can be a challenge. A child’s room needs to grow and change as they do; making it unlike any other room in a home. Finding the perfect combination of timeless design and unique vibrancy can be difficult to do. Luckily, there are professionals that have mastered the art, and we spoke to one of Calgary’s local designers to learn some secrets of room design. Tara Pallay is a showhome design coordinator for Trico Homes. Here, she shares three key secrets for creating an inspiring designer children’s room.
Changeability
As kids get older, their personality grows with them. This is important to remember when you begin designing a child’s bedroom. Things kids like today can be totally different from things they may like a month from now. Colours and pictures that they love right now could easily be a thing of the past within weeks. This is a concept that Tara Pallay always considers when designing a child’s room. “When it comes to themes, I try to limit it to pieces that can be easily and affordably replaced if the child tires of it” explains Pallay. “Things like art, accessories, or bedding are easily swapped out.”
Making a room that is changeable and easy to modify doesn’t mean that it needs to be completely plain or without colour. Making a designer children’s room that is vibrant and fun while remaining replaceable can be easy. “There are so many wallpapers, murals and decals on the market now that are a great way to infuse a child’s room with fun patterns and colour,” Pallay notes. To keep up with the exciting and always changing life of a child, it is important to design a room that can grow with them. Making sure the room can be changed through colour or accessories is critical to designing the ideal children’s room.
Keep it Classic
Though the design of a children’s room should provide flexibility to grow with a child, some of the more expensive additions to the room should be purchased with the expectation that they will remain in place for the long-term. When Tara Pallay designs a children’s room, this is always something that she thinks about. “Big-ticket items like the bed, dresser and nightstands are best kept to clean, classic styles and neutral finishes so they will easily transition with your child as their tastes change.”
A basic, simple look for furniture allows the higher-priced aspects of the room to remain a staple of the room all through a child’s growth. Classic furniture with black, white, or wood finishes provide a timeless look that will grow with your child and work with nearly any colour trend or phase that they are going through as they grow up.
Multi-purpose Furniture
Kids can be messy and more often than not, their bedroom becomes their paradise for rest and for play. With so much going on in one room, it is easy for your beautifully designed masterpiece to become a room of chaos. Tara Pallay knows that this is a concern that many parents have when it comes to their kid’s room, and she has a great solution. “Multi-purpose furniture like beds with drawers below, or benches that have lift-up lids are a great way to provide functional extra storage.” If you have a smaller home, and your kids have limited space in their room, Pallay has a solution for that as well; “Loft beds can also be an excellent way to save space in your child’s room. Getting the bed up off the floor can free up room for things like desks and bookshelves.”
Using multi-purpose furniture in your child’s room not only adds a unique touch of style, it also provides them with the necessary storage space to maintain an organized, clutter-free bedroom where they have space to be creative.
Designing a room for your child can be a fun process. This is an opportunity to design a space where your child can let their imagination run wild and explore their creativity. Though designing this room opens up a world of possibilities, there are a few design tricks that you can use to get the best value for your design dollar. Using these tips from Tara Pallay of Trico Homes, you can design the ideal space your child that will grow with them.
